The sheer drama of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula with its crashing turquoise surf and spectacular beaches is enough to make any newlyweds swoon. Add to that the grace and luxury of the One&Only Palmilla with its traditional Mexican chapel on the hill, red-tiled roofs, whitewashed walls, fountains and swaying palms, and it soon becomes apparent why more and more couples are heading there to tie the knot. The area is infused with romance as this is where the ocean greets the mountainous desert and the Pacific merges with the Sea of Cortez. Once the tropical hideaway of the likes of writer Ernest Hemingway and Hollywood actress Jean Harlow, One&Only Palmilla was founded in 1956 by Don Abelardo Rodriguez, son of General Abelardo Rodriguez, the interim president of Mexico. It has recently been restored to its now-legendary Mexican splendour following a $90 million refurbishment completed in February 2004. Set on one of the few swimming beaches in the region, the resort encompasses 1 square km (250 acres) of a 3.6 sq km (900 acre) site that includes private residences and a 27-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus.

Blood tests are required in Los Cabos two working days before the wedding, in accordance with Mexican law. Couples who have been married before must prove that a year has elapsed since their divorce or the death of their previous spouse. There must be a minimum of four witnesses, but the hotel is happy to provide these if necessary. Couples may opt to tie the knot against the stunning backdrop of the beach or on the Cantamar Terrace, in a ceremony conducted in Spanish by a Justice of the Peace from Los Cabos. Translators are available if requested in advance. But perhaps One&Only Palmilla's greatest attraction for weddings is its chapel, built in 1956 along with the original resort. Perched on a hill overlooking tropical grounds with the ocean beyond, it is in traditional Mexican style with a towering white facade.

Rooms and suites are spaciously arranged in single and three-storey buildings or 'casa' encircling the resorts' grounds along the edge of the peninsula, all with a patio or balcony overlooking the sea.

The new One&Only Spa at Palmilla takes its inspiration from the architectural and artistic heritage of Mexico. Thirteen private treatment villas easily accommodate two and have air conditioned massage pavilions opening on to a tropical garden. Hydrotherapy facilities include steam and sauna rooms as well as a watsu (water shiatsu) pool. In Mexico only civil marriages are recognized as legal. Couples may have a religious ceremony but it will have no legal validity. A blessing after the legal civil ceremony is recommended.
